How to Generate Essay Writing Ideas
Each term, students are assigned many essay writing assignments in various subjects by their tutors and professors as a way to test their knowledge of the subject and to allow them to develop and enhance their research and writing skills. The first step to completing an essay writing project is to generate essay writing ideas. There are some students, however who are not very proficient in writing and who will need essay writing help in putting down their ideas into paper. However, with the right guidance and doing the following tips, they will also be able to generate essay writing ideas:
- Freewriting. As the term suggests, this entails the student writing whatever comes to mind regarding the given topic. At this stage, the writer should not worry yet about conforming to standards in such aspects as spelling, grammar, vocabulary choice, organisation and content structure because there will be plenty of time to do that later when writing the actual draft. Freewriting can take on the following forms: listing down ideas, clustering words or sentences together or even simply jotting down random thoughts that emerge in your mind. To this end, always have a piece of paper or a small notebook with you especially when you set out to do research as you never know when a “light bulb moment” will come.
- Researching. Find out what are the research materials such as books or articles that are relevant to the topic and conduct a cursory reading where you just briefly scan their content to determine if they may be appropriate to be included as possible sources for your essay. For students who have not been given a specific topic, this is also one way that they can generate essay writing ideas. Consider such questions as how are your ideas related to theirs? Do they support or contradict the assertions of previous writers? Is my purpose as a writer different from theirs? Is it possible to include their ideas into my essay?

Tips for Generating Good Essay Writing Ideas
Many tutors and professors of various disciplines complain that reading and marking student essays is difficult because they are shallow, uninteresting, superficial, lacking in original ideas, and some are even similar in content and structure because the teacher assigns the same topic to an entire class of students at the same time. On the other hand, students find themselves at a loss on writing the essay either because they are not gifted with good writing skills or their knowledge of the topic is not enough. What will make both sides happier is for students to generate essay writing ideas that will ensure an interesting, relevant, well-organised and well-structured essays.
The problem can be identified as the fact that most students only spend a few minutes to think quickly and generate around three or four essay writing ideas before immediately proceeding to draft the essay contents. While this procedure is acceptable on time-constrained exams, this will not do for take-home essays giving the students several days of writing because other students who are using more efficient methods to generate good essay writing ideas will be able to write better essays. Below are some of the ways that will help students generate essay writing ideas that will impress their teachers:
Free-writing
As the name suggests, this involves the student writing any and all ideas that comes to mind on a given topic. The objective is to bring all ideas to the surface so that the student can distinguish which are good ones and which are better crossed out with a pen. This approach will probably have the writer rejecting many ideas before spotting a good one. Therefore, you initially do not have to fret about just being able to churn good ideas. Just get all your ideas out. Picking the useful ones and organising the spelling, grammar, format and structure will follow naturally.

How I Developed Essay Writing Ideas For My Essay Writing Tasks
It was a few weeks before I started as a first year journalism student at a university in the East Midlands area when I was reading and studying about essay writing because it is a common academic writing task we would perform. I read that getting essay writing ideas for essays would be a crucial stage of the essay writing process because the quality of the content of the ideas and on how a student was able to convey or discuss the ideas in the essay is one of the important factors considered by a lecturer when he evaluates an essay. So I read extensively on how to develop and gather ideas for essays so I would have less difficulties when I actually start researching and writing essays when I start my studies.
I read that whether the lecturer assigns a topic or we are given the option of choosing the topic, an effective research on getting ideas for the topic is very important. So the first step in getting essay writing ideas for the topic is through thorough and comprehensive research from materials and other resources from the library and from the Internet. I learned that I should thoroughly read and analyse the information so I would only collect the materials that are relevant and applicable for the topic.
The next step I learned is to be creative or original in obtaining essay writing ideas. Since there are instances in our essay writing tasks that we would have similar or related subject areas or topics of interests, it is important that we should have uniqueness in our choice of ideas without losing the theme or point of the topic. So a good way of getting unique ideas would be reading information or other materials that have little relevance to the topic. This method could inspire or stimulate my creative mind in thinking of ideas for the topic.
